With the improvement of the technological solutions diversity and the growth of the company, Silampos saw the need to expand its structures to keep its systems in operation. How did the transition take place? Samsys has provided this transformation and we shared the story to inspire other companies to evolve and take the next step to grow their business.
The process started when Silampos informed us that the system had several problems, it was slow, the operating systems were old-fashioned (obsolete), there was a lock in the system, there was no redundancy of resources (which is essential in case of failure of systems – learn more about high availability clustering), there was no disaster recovery system, and it was necessary to solve certain issues, such as domain problems, authentication, replication and duplication of services problems, on Silampos’ servers (Domain Controllers and File Servers).
These failures were also affecting the perfect functioning of the company. Internally it was not easy to administer the different services, because of the failures that were usually occurring.
When we realised these occurrences, the action had to be immediate and effective: to suggest and to implement new solutions of hardware and software, that are below.
Filling system slowness and redundancy
After auditing, it was verified that there was a need to clean and reorganize the functionalities of each server (roles). At the same time, it was necessary to implement a state-of-the-art high-availability solution, called VRTX, as this solution can contain up to 4 high-performance, small-size servers (blades), that function as modules that organize resources. On the other side, it has the disks, which serve as a shared storage system between the various servers (SAN – virtual machine). This DELL PowerEdge VRTX modular infrastructure solution can grow in every way, depending on the size of the company. For example, increasing storage capacity by adding SSDs (device type, no moving parts, for non-volatile storage of digital data, which increases readability and write speed) and increase processing by adding more blade-type servers.
Premium software solution – Virtualization through VMWare;
Resolved the organizational part of the different functions/functionalities
Previously, for companies to have all their needs fulfilled (database, email servers, application servers, etc.) they had to resort to multiple servers, which represented very high costs for most companies.
Currently, with two physical servers, we have multiple virtual servers, so it is no longer necessary to invest in several physical servers to accommodate all the functionalities that are necessary for the company.
This was one of Samsys’ missions: reducing the number of physical servers in Silampos. VMWare has been deployed, each of the physical hosts has installed the OS ESXI 6.5 (operating system that has VMWare).
In addition, a management console for the various virtual machines, the virtual centre, was set up, from which high availability was created between these two physical hosts. In the VMs were installed fundamental services for the correct functioning of the infrastructure of Silampos.
Disaster Recovery Hardware Solution – Dell Storage SVC 2000
Disaster prevention – recovery of resources
This solution consists of a data centre duplication, at approximately 500m, from the main VRTX data centre, which contains the VMs, cloning them to a secondary data centre – Dell Storage SVC 2000, which ensures the recovery of all services in case of disaster (short circuit, fire, flood, etc.).
The Team verified that the company already had backup software, called VEEAM, which was also used by Samsys to leverage this tool to replicate the virtual servers from the main data centre to the secondary data centre.
