Information Security – an online attack every 39 seconds

There is a huge need for companies

improve your online security.

To get a complete picture of the term information security, we need to start with the definition of both words.

  • Information – is the gathering of data about something or someone.
  • Security – means being free from a potential threat or protected from that threat.

It all goes to Thermomix and…

If we put the two words together, we get information security, generally referred to as InfoSec. Information Security, at its core, means that you are protecting your data from someone or something.

Confidentiality: A little privacy, please!

Confidentiality is exactly what it sounds like: keeping your information secret. As security professionals, the worst thing we can do is allow someone else to obtain your information without your consent. That would be unauthorized disclosure. Yes… and we as IT Professionals have nightmares about it.

The best way to keep your information secret is to ensure there is access control and that information is encrypted. Fortunately, most companies do this nowadays and we work closely with our clients to carry out this control.

There is a huge need for companies to improve their online security.

everything is information

Remember that your emails, documents, customer communications, financial records, intellectual property, strategic plans, budgets, marketing materials… are all valuable to you. They can be even more valuable to other people.

The harsh reality is that business vulnerability starts as soon as you have an email address.

And is your business protected?

If you are reading this article, you are probably someone who uses the internet every day, know 4 curiosities that may surprise you when it comes to online security and why we are concerned about the growing number of attacks:

  1. Some email providers can actually read your emails.
It probably uses an email that uses encryption by default. But encryption just means that your data is encrypted in such a way that only you and your recipients can read the information. But not all emails are end-to-end encrypted. Talk to us to better explain this situation and find out if your emails are end-to-end encrypted.
  2. Incognito mode is not incognito.
Private browsing prevents your browser from collecting data about your visits to websites, but your ISP can still see everything you do. Make sure with us that you are doing much more than just browsing incognito.
  3. Anyone can “hack” your “strong” password – with the necessary resources.
Imagine that the password you use has only 3 characters and only digits. Nobody does this right? Let's hope not. Back to the subject… this means that there are only 1000 possibilities for the password: 000 to 999. So with a little patience or resorting to a “brute force” method (thousands of combinations per second through some applications) your data is completely exposed!
  4. Online attacks happen every 39 seconds.
Curious about this theme we went to investigate. According to the study of Clark School at the University of Maryland, on average an online attack happens every 39 seconds through automated scripts that indiscriminately scan thousands of computers for vulnerabilities. Surprising no?
